Bashkir regions announce emergency situation because of locust

Municipal authorities of four regions RB announced the emergency situation mode in struggle with locust. Khaibullinsky region was the first. After that chemical treatment was launched on the fields of Kyurgazinsky and Kugartchinsky regions. Now Baimaksky region joined the first three.

The Ministry of agriculture RB reports Zianchurinsky and Zilairsky regions also turn to the medium security, struggling with locust.

The chemical measures of struggle with locust are applied when the population of these voracious insects exceeds the economic threshold of injuriousness – 10-15 adult locusts per one square meter. In such cases local authorities announce the emergency mode and start chemical treatment.

“There are no agricultural lands, damaged by locust, in Bashkortostan at present time” – the head of the progressive technologies dept of the Ministry of agriculture RB Arthur Nigumanov says.

At present time 60 thousand hectares have been sprayed with the chemicals and other 40-45 thousand still have to be chemically treated in the Republic.

The Ministry of agriculture RB keeps the situation with locust under close control. The specialists say the beginning of the mass locust reproduction fell on the last year. In 2011 it is still going on. During one month and a half agronomists are struggling with locust and now the peak of locust abundance is observed. Further the situation has to go down. Very hot and damp weather contributed to stormy reproduction of locust before.

The specialists say that such situation was already registered in the Republic in 1996-1998 and 300 thousand hectares have been treated with chemicals that time and in 1986 – more than 600 thousand hectares.
