Today is the Day of Fatherland’s Heroes in Russia
Russia celebrates the Day of Fatherland’s Heroes for the third time today. This is one of the newest dates and it appeared in the calendar on February 28, 2007, after the corresponding federal law had been signed by the former President of Russia Vladimir Putin. December 9 was chosen as the memorable date because this very day (November 26 according to the old style) 340 years ago the Empress Catherine the II had established the order of St George the Victory-Bearer, meant for the most courageous warriors. The holiday of St George knights was celebrated this day in Russia before 1917. Now December 9 is the day for honoring the Heroes of the Soviet Union, Heroes of Russia and the knights of St George Order and the Glory Order.
The Day of Fatherland’s Heroes is called to unite the history of feats of arms and heroes of the army of Russia from the moment of its establishment till nowadays.
The encyclopedia of Bashkortostan includes the names of 305 Heroes of the Soviet Unions and Heroes of Russia and 37 full knights of the Glory Order, who either had been born on the territory of Bashkortostan, once lived here or settled here after demobilization.
Unfortunately, there are only two Heroes of the Soviet Union left in Bashkortostan for today: the retired mayor Tazetdin Gilyazetdinov and retired colonel Alexander Puskunov. Both heroes live in Ufa.
