Russian saber fencers wongold and silver in individual events at Olympic Games
Russian saber fencers Sofia Pozdnyakova and Sofya Velikaya won gold and silver, respectively, in the individual tournament at the Olympic Games in Tokyo. In the final, Pozdnyakova defeated Velikaya with a score of 15:11, according to RIA Novosti.
Sofia Pozdnyakova's gold became the second for the Russian national team at the Games in Tokyo. In total, the Russian team has ten medals (2 gold, 5 silver, 3 bronze).
Pozdnyakova is the daughter of the four-time Olympic champion of the Russian saber fencer Stanislav Pozdnyakov, who is now the head of the Russian Olympic Committee.
Olympic champion of the Games in Rio de Janeiro in the team tournament Sofia Velikaya at the Olympics in Brazil won silver in the individual tournament, losing in the final to another Russian athlete Yana Yegoryan. She also finished second at the London Games, losing to Kim Ji Young of South Korea in the final.
