Ufa honored memory of Chernobyl accident liquidators

On April 26, a solemn meeting dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant was held in Ufa. Chernobyl veterans, family members of their deceased co-workers, representatives of the authorities, youth organizations gathered at the memorial to the Hero-Liquidators of the Chernobyl and Other Radiation Disasters in Victory Park to pay tribute to the participants in the events that happened thirty-five years ago.

"35 years ago, there was a major human-made accident. There was little information about it — the time was like that. However, we must remember that common people eliminated its consequences. First of all, we are talking about the military and members of student detachments. They showed by their example how to be courageous, how to rescue people," the Chief of Staff of the Head of Bashkiria, Alexander Sidyakin, noted at the ceremony of laying flowers to the monument.

He also added that a gala concert had been held at the Bashkir State Academic Theater, where high state awards had been presented to active participants in the Chernobyl movement.

The largest radiation catastrophe in the history of humankind at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant occurred on April 26, 1986, and became a striking warning. Despite the danger to their lives, thousands of people did everything they could to reduce the devastating consequences in a short time.

More than 8 thousand of our fellow countrymen participated in the liquidation of the accident. Many of them have not survived to this day.

Currently, 1902 participants in the liquidation of the consequences of the Chernobyl accident, and 670 of their family members live in Bashkortostan.
