Copper quarry reclamation is needed - Russian Popular Front about situation in Sibay
UFA, 14 December 2018. /Bashinform News Agency, Gulfiya Akulova/ translated by Tatiana Aksyutina/.
The republican headquarters of the Russian Popular Front proposes a comprehensive program for the reclamation of sulfur-containing waste dumps in an unexploited copper mine for a fundamental solution to the problem of smog and the smell of hydrogen sulfide in the city of Sibay.
According to the Regional Department of Emergency Situations Ministry, gas contamination occurred due to the accumulation of smoke from hydrogen sulfide released during the ore oxidation in the unexploited copper ore mining quarry.
Old dumps of the Bashkir Copper-Sulfur Combine (now Uchalinsky Mining and Processing Plant) are smoldering near Sibay. The smoldering occurred regularly, but this time, due to adverse weather conditions, the process became more large-scale.
“There is no guarantee that such a situation will not happen again, therefore a comprehensive program for the reclamation of sulfur-containing waste dumps is necessary for a radical solution of the problem,” said Vitaly Brykin, head of the Russian Popular Front regional executive committee in Bashkortostan.
With this initiative, experts of the Russian Popular Front intend to apply to the Ministry of Ecology and Environmental Management of the region.
Now the city has an interdepartmental operational headquarters, which task is to minimize the consequences of man-made accidents. Deputies of the State Assembly RB left for the city of Sibay.
