Cave lions will be excavated at Bashkiria National Park

Russian scientists will continue to excavate the unique in the world "cemetery" of cave lions at Bashkiria National Park. It was discovered last year in the Imanay Cave, according to TASS. Earlier in the world it has not been found yet such a place of mass cave lions remains. The scientists estimate the approximate age of the find as 35 to 200 thousand years. The scientific expedition is scheduled for July 11.
Last year, scientists managed to dig only half of remains: 10 adults cave lions — nine males and one female. So far it was managed to recover a skull of one lion.
"Its main feature is dimensions: length — 50 cm, which is about 1.5 times larger than the modern African lion, so we can call it a giant lion — it is the first discovery of entire skeletons of cave lions in Russia", TASS quotes the head of Historical Ecology Laboratory of the Plant And Animal Ecology Institute Ural Department RAS Pavel Kosintsev.
Ural archaeologists discovered the remains of over 500 cave lions at Bashkiria National Park in August last year. In addition, there were discovered Mousterian stone tools.
