February 8th - the Day of Russian Science

The scientific community in Russia celebrates its professional holiday — the Day of Russian Science. On February 8, 1724 (January 28 Old Style), the Academy of Sciences was founded in Russia by the Decree of the Senate on the order of Peter I. In 1925 it was renamed to the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, and in 1991 – to the Russian Academy of Sciences.
On June 7, 1999 the Day of Russian Science with the celebration on February 8 was established by the Presidential Decree. The Decree states that the holiday was established "considering a prominent role of domestic science in development of state and society, following the historical traditions and in commemoration of the 275th anniversary of the Russia's Academy of Sciences foundation".
The Ufa Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences operates in Bashkortostan, which comprises more than a dozen institutions, and the Academy of Sciences RB. Every year, scientists of the republic become winners of significant prizes at the federal level.
