Rustem Khamitov will root for Olympians from Bashkortostan
The President of Bashkortostan Rustem Khamitov will root for athletes representing the republic at the Olympics in Sochi, which opens today, on February 7. This was said by the head of the republic in an interview to the editor of "Komsomolskaya Pravda" Vladimir Sungorkin.
“In Sochi 14 athletes from the republic will compete, we are among five regions mostly represented in the national team. Strong guys are in short track, there may be medals also, six of our girls will play for Russia in ice hockey, and if everything goes well a medal should be there”, Rustem Khamitov said. “Ski jumping: I believe that Vasiliev will make his best. We will root for everybody. I would like that our athletes receive more medals.”
Bashkortostan President stressed that the republic was ready to expenditures for prizes, "let them be a little more".
Evaluating preparedness of athletes from the republic, Khamitov said that ski jumpers and Nordic combined skiers have been strong in Ufa since Soviet times; they have entered national teams throughout the years.
“Three years ago, Vladislav Tretiak contacted me personally and asked for help in creating a women's team in ice hockey. The team was created the same year. The first year was not good, the second was better, but the third year they had medals already. Today six our players are in the national team,” the head of the republic said.
The President marked also Paralympians from Bashkortostan. The Russian team includes five athletes from the republic.
“There we also have good chances for medals. Our famous Irek Zaripov will participate in biathlon and cross-country skiing. I think he would certainly return with a medal”, Khamitov expressed his confidence.
