The delegation of Bashkortostan women headed by the chairman of the Union of Women RB Rashida Sultonova presented our region at the XX International Conference "Women Changing the World" in St. Petersburg. The forum was attended by the Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Lyudmila Shvetsova, Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation Olga Golodets.
More than seven hundred representatives of fair sex from all over the world — from Sweden to South Africa, from the UK to Australia and 37 regions of Russia discussed the issues of preventing all forms of discrimination and creating conditions for gender equality in all spheres of public life.
The former Finnish President Tarja Halonen spoke about the influence of women on global processes and made a stress on family issues. According to her, men could be more involved in housework and children upbringing. She urged women of the world to unite.
Ex-President of Kyrgyzstan Roza Otunbaeba noted that women played the leading role in stopping the bloodshed during Kyrgyz events. Today they occupy key positions in the government of the country and have 23 percent at the Parliament of the Republic.
The most surprising was delegation from Namibia, where the law on gender equality was adopted, which supposed to bring the representation of women at all levels of government to 50 percent.
