According to the Bashkortostan Statistics Agency, now 697 thousand people or every sixth inhabitant of the republic receives education in various educational institutions.
In 2012-2013 academic year 435 thousand pupils studied in comprehensive schools, including in cities — 255 thousand pupils, in rural areas — 180 thousand pupils.
Since 1998-1999 a tendency of annual reduction of number of students in educational institutions sets to continue. It is explained by a demographic recession. As of the beginning of 2013 number of children at the age of 7-8 years — «potential first-graders» amounted to 89 thousand, and in 2000 — to 116 thousand. The population at the age of 17-18 years in 2012, in comparison with 2000, decreased by 34 thousand and reached 95 thousand people.
In the republic there are 96 establishments of basic vocational education and 12 — of secondary vocational education.
13 independent universities and also 25 branches of universities, which head establishments are located in other regions of Russia, — Moscow, Samara, Chelyabinsk, Orenburg and Yekaterinburg prepare experts with higher vocational education.
162,6 thousand employees, or every eighth employed person are occupied in the republican education system.
Every second teacher of a comprehensive school (54 percent) has a pedagogical experience exceeding 20 years.
Four thousand teachers work in secondary special educational institutions.
The total number of the teaching staff of republican universities exceeds seven thousand people.
In the age structure of the teaching staff of higher and secondary special educational institutions it is necessary to mark an increase in the share of teachers at the age of 30-39 years and over 65 years.
