The tortoises, inhabiting the south of Bashkiria, turned out under the threat of disappearance, the candidate of biological sciences, docent of the zoology chair at the Bashkir State University Viner Khabibullin reports. This species is included into the Red Book RB and in Europe these reptiles are also found under protection.

“Only several dozen tortoises still live in Republican pools and every year their number goes down since the borders of their natural habitat narrow down” – the scientist told to the news agency “Bashinform”.

Only one species – Emys orbicularis – lives in Bashkiria. Earlier the tortoises were often met in lakes of Baimakski and Khaibullinski regions and in the course of numerous expeditions scientists often watched that local children were playing with tortoises in the yards. Poachers presented ashtrays, made of tortoise shells, to their friends. In the past this reptile could be met in pools of seven regions RB.

According to Viner Khabibullin in Germany these tortoises reach the 80-year age and in Bashkiria this reptile live for maximally 30 years. The scientist suggests that in order to protect this rare species one should open a special natural park on Bashkir territory.
