The seminar, in the course of which the necessity for imams to have secular education was discussed, has taken place at the Islamic college by Miriam Sultanova.
The seminar was initiated by the college’s directorate jointly with the Bashkir State Pedagogical University and the Institute of ethnologic investigations RB.
The results of the investigations, made by the Institute of ethnologic investigations in 2005, 2009 and 2011, show that not so much the graduates of Islamic colleges as the respected people remain the main source for clergy formation. For instance, in our villages the clergy mainly consists of veterans of war and directors of local schools. In opinion of the participants of the seminar the problem is that just 1% of Muslim graduates become imams. The director of the Islamic College Ildar Malakhov says that imams should have a wide range of knowledge and in his opinion they have to make the conditions for students of religious education institutions so that they would be able to receive additional secular education at their madrasahs and not at other institutes by correspondence.
