Today is the Day of struggle with AIDS. In 2011 it is the 30th anniversary since the beginning of the epidemic. AIDS took the lives of more than 25 million lives away and more than 60 million people were infected with HIV. This epidemic failed to avoid Bashkortostan too.
According to information of the Russian Agency for Health and Consumer Rights in Bashkortostan 12258 HIV-infected were registered in the Republic since 1987. For ten months of 2011 1264 new cases of HIV infection was registered (except the information, taken from the State Penitentiary Service), including children at the age of 13-14. At present time 328 kids with the perinatal contact on HIV infection are registered in the Republic. The index of sickness rate made up 31,1 cases per 100 thousand people, i.e. 1,4 times higher than the same showing in 2010 (21,8 cases in 2010).
As the specialists say, active popularization of knowledge about HIV is the first and the most important step towards prevention of the virus spreading and within the frames of the Day of struggle with AIDS numerous actions, aimed at prophylactics of HIV infection are held and still be held in the Republic of Bashkortostan. The Republican goal-oriented program for prevention of AIDS in 2008-2012 is working in the Republic. Within the frames of this program the specialists of the Republican Anti-AIDS Center examine all patients anonymously and absolutely free.
