Russia celebrates the Day of Airborne Troops

author: Sergey Zakharov

The 81st anniversary of the Airborne Troops – the elite of the Russian Armed Forces – is celebrated on August 2.

For the first time the maneuvers of the airborne unit, consisting of 12 soldiers, have taken place on August 2, 1930, under Voronezh.

During the Great Patriotic War 296 commandos have been rewarded with the rank of the Hero of the Soviet Union, including eight natives of Bashkortostan.

The “blue caps” carried out special operations in Afghanistan and in the North Caucasus. During the anti-terrorist operations in Chechnya and Dagestan four our compatriots have become the Heroes of Russia. The motto of the “winged guardians” remains invariable in the course of many years: “Nobody, Except Us!”.

According to the old tradition all generations of former commandos will gather today at the airport “ZABELSKY” near Ufa.
