Wi-Fi in trams: the electric transport of Ufa will be supplied with the special equipment for using internet by the passengers directly on the way. There is just one such tram in Ufa already now and till the end of July other 19 machines will be equipped with Wi-Fi, the head of IT and communications service of Ufa Municipal Electric Transport Dept Sergey Bogdanov reported to “Bashinform”.

“First of all we intend to install the equipment for internet access on the routes, used mainly by students and young people” – he mentioned.

The tram routes NN 4,5, 16 and 18 run by the education  institutions and student’s hostels in Ufa and Wi-Fi will appear on these routes first of all. Every tram with internet onboard will be specially labeled in order to make it clear for the passengers, is the internet access available inside the tram or not.

According to Sergey Bogdanov 20 passengers may use Wi-Fi at the same time.

“All tram routes are looped and we tested the internet access quality along the whole route – the speed is rather high and no losses of connection were registered” – Sergey Bogdanov reported.

Along with the trams the internet equipment will be installed in two trolley-buses, running between the longest city routes – N2 and N12. If this service faces good demand, what one can more or less fairly judge about unless and until the beginning of a new school year, the number of the trams and trolley-buses with the internet access onboard will go up. The financial expenses for equipping of one vehicle with Wi-Fi equipment aren’t too high – 2300 rubles and for passengers this service will be absolutely free.
