The Day of Bulgaria unyoking is closely connected with the history of our country. Russia had supported the rebel of the Slavic nations, found under the pressure of Osman Empire, and entered the war, known in history as the Russian-Turkish war of 1877-1878. In Bulgaria that war was called the liberation one.

In the course of the war actions the Russian Army and the Bulgarian irregulars had managed to defeat the Turkish troops and the Saint-Stephan peaceful treaty between Russia and Osman Empire has been signed on March 3, 1878. According to the treaty Bulgaria became an independent state and Turkey also pronounced the independency of Montenegro, Serbia and Romania.

“Many historical and literary myths are related to this date today” – the Professor of the Bashkir State University Valerie Pugachev says – “We know about the Russian-Turkish war of 1877-1878 mainly from books, movies and theatrical shows. There are different points of views on this event but, this way or another, it has left its noticeable print in the history of both Bulgaria and Russia as well as of Turkey, wh ere the way of life started gradually changing after that war”.

March 3 is considered a national holiday in Bulgaria and this country remembers quite well all those, who once helped the country to maker itself free. More than 400 monuments to the Russian liberators stand in Bulgaria now.

The Friendship Society “Bashkortostan-Bulgaria” develops cultural relations between our republics, organizing exhibitions of Bulgarian painters in Bashkiria and holding various charitable actions. The work of the Society was estimated by the Bulgarian Government at its true worth – several people from our Republic were rewarded on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the Victory over the fascist Germany.
