The President of Bashkiria Rustem Khamitov has become the first leader in the history of Bashkortostan, kindling the festive Hanukkia (Hanukkah candle). This solemn ceremony has taken place on Sunday on the Lenin’s Square in Ufa. Hanukkia is the symbol of one of the most substantial Jewish holidays – Hanukkah. The representatives of this nation, living in Bashkiria, have never met such attention from the top leadership of the Republic before.
“Hanukkah is considered one of the most ancient and big Jewish holidays” – Rustem Khamitov said – “And it is important that this tradition is maintained through many centuries, including the Jews, inhabiting our Republic. I wish all of you strong health, good luck, love and friendship. The fire of Hanukkah, kindled in the center of Ufa today, is considered the symbol of all these goods and the best human feelings”.
Together with the chief rabbi of Bashkiria Dan Krichevsky Rustem Khamitov has kindled the main hanukkia (candle) of the Republic. It will shine during three days till the end of Hanukkah in spite of wind and snow – the Hanukkah candles were replaced with the electric lamps especially for the winter street conditions of Ufa.
