All Slavic nations celebrate the Day of Slavic literature and culture every year on May 24. According to the Christian calendar this is the day of honoring of the apostles Cyril and Methodius – the creators of Slavic literature. The Slavic alphabet was created in the IX century, about the year 862. The new alphabet was called “Cyrillic” by the name of the Byzantine Constantine, who became Cyril, having adopted the monkshood. His elder brother Methodius helped him. Cyril invented the Slavic ABC on the base of the Greek alphabet but changed it for reflecting the Slavic sound system better. At present time Cyrillic alphabet is the base of the written language of the nations, inhabiting the vast territory – from the Adriatic Sea to the Bering Strait, and is the ABC for more than one hundred nations on the territory of Russia. These nations speak different languages but they are united by the common history and the common written language, made by the enlighteners Cyril and Methodius.
