Muslims celebrate the birthday of the prophet Muhammad

author: Eugene Rakhimkulov

Muslims of Bashkortostan are celebrating the birthday of the prophet Muhammad today jointly with the coreligionists all over the world.

People began to mark the birthday of Muhammad just 300 years after the appearance of Islam. Since the exact date of the prophet’s birth was unknown, this memorable event was dated to the day of Muhammad’s death – the 12th of Rabi-al-avval (the third month of Hegira – the Muslim calendar).

At present time the birthday of the prophet Muhammad is widely celebrated by all Muslims and in some countries, for example in Pakistan, it is considered a state holiday, celebrated during three days.

Traditionally all Muslims express their happiness this day on the occasion of Muhammad’s arrival in this world, whom they consider the last minister of the God. The believers read prayers and poems about birth and life of the prophet and distribute alms.
