On October 20 Mustai Karim — the national poet RB – would have celebrated his 90th anniversary. It seems not long ago, in autumn 2004, the Republican public community celebrated his 85th anniversary and Mustai Karim addressed himself to all participants of that evening party with the call to take care of our land. These words of the great Bashkir poet were grasped by citizens of Bashkortostan as the testament.

The birth date of Mustai Karim by a fluke coincides with the birth date of the Bashkir Soviet Autonomous Socialist Republic and it seems there is a deep sense in this coincidence because the whole life and creative way of Mustai Karim was lightened by his only one and big love in Bashkortostan and in his remarkable people. This love was his guiding star and helped him to overcome the hardship and shocks of the hard 20th century.

The national poet of Bashkortostan Mustai Karim was born on October 20, 1919, in the village Klyashevo, Bashkiria, in the family of a peasant. In 1941 he had finished the faculty of language and literature of the Bashkir State University. From the very first days of the Great Patriotic War and till the Victory Mustai Karim was at the front. He was heavily wounded and later worked as a reporter of several front newspapers.

Mustai Karim started to write in the middle of 30s. The first book of his poems “The squadron made a move” was published in 1938 and the second poetic collection “The Spring Voices” – in 1942. Since then he had published more than 100 poetic and prosaic collections and more than 10 dramatic works.

Mustai Karim belongs to that galaxy of activists of culture, who had made great endowment to “the golden fund” of Russian multinational literature and to the world literature as well. Poetry, dramaturgy, prose and publicism were subject to his powerful talent. The works of Mustai Karim are translated into dozens languages of Russia and the whole world.

Mustai Karim is the Hero of Socialist Labor, national poet of Bashkortostan, honorable activist of arts of Russia, honorable academician of the Academy of sciences RB. He was rewarded with two Lenin Orders, the Red Labor Banner Order, the Nations Friendship Order, “The Honor Sign”, the order of the Great Patriotic War of the I and the II degrees, the Red Star Order and with the order “For the merits before the Fatherland”.

The national poet RB Mustai Karim had died on September 21, 2005, in Ufa and was buried on the Muslim Cemetery. He is considered the conscience of the Bashkir nation. He left the unique and invaluable literary heritage after himself, which would be the source of inspiration for future generations forever.
