Chief otorhinolaryngologist of Russia: means for cochlear implantation are included only in the budgets of Bashkortostan and St. Petersburg
"There only two regions in Russia — St. Petersburg and Bashkortostan — where local legislators and government agencies gained a separate line in budget for cochlear implantation" — the chief otorhinolaryngologist of Ministry of Public Health and Social Development RF, chief physician of clinical hospital N122 Jacov Nakatis told at the press-conference in St. Petersburg.
According to him, about 500 children are now on the waiting list for this operation, and one should wait for 2-3 years to be operated on. "But if federal financing keeps the same level we will be able to do away with this waiting-list for 3-4 years" — Nakatis said. He emphasized the fact that cochlear implantation is still one of the most expensive kinds of high-technology medical assistance — the cost of implant and the operation itself amounts to about one million roubles.
On October 8-9, the All-Russian research and practice conference "The main problems of rehabilitation of children with impaired hearing and methods of their solution" will take place in St. Petersburg. The experience of St. Petersburg, Bashkortostan, Krasnodar territory and other regions will be represented on it.
