Largest landfill in Bashkiria needs reconstruction
The solid municipal waste landfill near the village of Cherkassy serves the largest zone of regional operator No. 1 in Bashkiria, which includes Ufa and 14 municipal districts with a total population of 1.45 million people. About 750 thousand tons of household waste is generated annually in this territory, and due to increased consumption and a large number of different packaging, the volume of garbage collected increases on average by 3-5% per year.
The Municipal Unitary Enterprise “Spetsavtohozyaistvo” servicing the area No. 1 explained the Bashinform News Agency that the largest landfill in Cherkassy with a total area of 56 hectares did not meet modern environmental legislation. To solve the problem, it needs reconstruction, which provides for the installation of a geomembrane coating at the bottom, collection of landfill gas, and filtrate from rotting garbage with their subsequent processing or neutralization.
In 2016 — 2018, the Center for Improvement and Waste Management (Moscow) developed a project for the reconstruction of the landfill and submitted it to the state environmental review. Due to several remarks, the project received a negative review and was sent for revision. After eliminating the drawbacks and obtaining a positive conclusion, the landfill operation will be extended for another 15-17 years without any violation of the law. The terms of these works are not specified.
As “Spetsavtohozyaistvo” explained, now the closed catchment system to prevent environmental harm operates at the landfill. All wastewater from the bypass ditches is collected into a storage pond, from where it is piped to irrigate the landfill, preventing fire ignition. In the area where the landfill affects the environment, surface, groundwater, air, and soil are monitored. Monitoring is conducted by the accredited laboratory of the Center for Hygiene and Epidemiology RB.
