In Bashkiria, protection zones will be created for six nature monuments of republican significance, including Tratau and Yuraktau Shikhans (monadnocks). The Ministry of Environment RB has published a draft decree, the document is being examined. The Ohlebininsky plaster cave (Iglino district), the Karlamansky cave and the Bolshaya Kolapak rock (Karmaskaly district), Lake Tugar-Salgan (located at the foot of Tratau, in the Ishimbay district) will also be subject to protection.
In the protected zone, the reserve regime should be observed, the department explained: it prohibits any industrial activity and storage of garbage and watering of livestock on the lake. In addition, the gathering of fossils, plants for herbaria and insects in entomological collections will be prohibited around Tratau, and the grazing of livestock around Yuraktau.
Another Shihan — Kushtau, has no protection status. The “Bashkir Soda Company” planned to get Tratau into its development, which contains limestone of suitable quality, but the republic’s leadership decided to keep Tratau and Yuraktau protected, having granted the company permission to extract resources at Kushtau.
