Today is the International Mother Language Day. It was established at the initiative of the 30th session of the General Conference of UNESCO in November 1999 aiming at preserving linguistic diversity and promoting multilingual education based on mother languages. "UNESCO reaffirms its commitment to linguistic diversity and encourages Member States to celebrate this Day in as many languages as possible, which should serve as a reminder of the key importance of linguistic diversity and multilingualism for sustainable development", it is stated on the website of the international organization.
"There are about seven thousand languages and dialects on Earth, only in our country more than 190 peoples speak 277 languages and dialects. There are a lot of languages: both living and dead ones — Latin, Sanskrit, Old Russian. There are also artificial ones – there are 16 of them, Esperanto, for example. There are revived languages, in particular, Hebrew, which has not been spoken for almost 18 centuries. In Bashkortostan, studies are conducted in six languages , and 14 native languages are studied as subjects. The native language is an essence of culture and national spirit, which especially today, in the conditions of globalization, needs protection, preservation and development", Zugura Rakhmatullina, the Chairman of the Assembly of the Peoples RB noted.
